Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles are two Poodle cross breeds popular amongst designer dog enthusiasts. 

A Goldendoodle is a crossbreed between a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle. Whereas a Bernedoodle is a crossbreed between a purebred Bernese Mountain dog and a purebred Poodle. Both these crossbreeds have a lot of things in similar, but they yet carry major differences.

Goldendoodle Vs Bernedoodle History and Origin

Also known as Groodles, Goldendoodles first appeared in the mid of 1990s in the United States. Whereas on the other hand, Bernedoodles came in the early 2000s, and they hail from Switzerland. Goldendoodles were bred as hunting dogs, whereas Bernedoodles lived on mountains and were meant to make their life in snowy areas.

Of both these Poodle cross breeds, Bernedoodles are relatively newer Doodles. History and Origin play a very significant role in deciding which breed will be the right for your home.

One of the major differences that set apart a Goldendoodle and a Bernedoodle is their size. A Bernedoodle is always larger than a Goldendoodle because Bernese Mountain Dogs are larger than Golden Retrievers.

For instance, a Standard Goldendoodle will grow 20 and 24 inches tall and weigh anywhere between 40 to 60 pounds. In contrast, a Standard Bernedoodle will grow 23 and 29 inches tall and weigh anywhere between 55 to 90 pounds.

While their miniature versions, like these these mini goldendoodles, can do well in an apartment setting, a Standard Goldendoodle and Bernedoodle will require good enough space to stretch. Dog lovers with small homes should go for a Toy, Mini, or Medium Goldendoodle or Bernedoodle.

Both Goldendoodle and Bernedoodle have a similar Poodle-like appearance but with some obvious differences. Bernedoodles have a stockier build than Goldendoodles, and that’s what sets them apart.

Goldendoodles may have a wavy, curly or straight coat, whereas Berndoodles may have a wavy to curly coat. Berndoodles’ coats may be dominant on their Bernese Mountain dog DNA. 

Goldendoodles come in a range of colors. Your Groodle can be anything from gold, red, caramel, cream, apricot, black, grey, or another phantom color. In contrast, a Bernedoodle is mostly black or may come in colors including tri-colored with black, white, and brown.

Apart from their Coat differences, both Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles require daily coat brushing in order to keep them shiny, healthy, and sorted. If not maintained, their coat can form tangles. 

Goldendoodle vs. Bernedoodle Personality, Behavior, and Temperament

Both Goldendoodle and Bernedoodle are incredibly friendly and excited in any social situation. Their temperament is well suited for a family situation. However, both these doodles surely have some differences in their personality.

Bernedoodles are known for their calm and relaxed. They love sitting and cuddling with their humans. Goldendoodles, on the other hand, have higher energy levels and therefore are active most of the time.

Bernedoodles have a pack instinct, whereas Goldendoodles are more social. Due to this particular personality, both breeds often suffer from separation anxiety.

Both Groodle and Bernedoodle are notedly healthy breeds, but they still share some health disadvantages. 

Goldendoodles, due to floppy ears, are always at a higher risk of ear infections. Groodles also suffer from eye infections along with tooth or gum disease more likely.

Bernedoodles, on the other hand, suffer from hip or elbow dysplasia more commonly. They, upon aging, may suffer from partial or full eyesight loss as well.

Goldendoodle vs. Bernedoodle Exercise, and Training 

Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles are active dog breeds that need 45 minutes to an hour of daily exercise. Both breeds enjoy their time in parks, hiking trail, swimming pools, or your home backyard. 

In addition to exercise, their training needs to are very similar. Since both breeds are very clever, they can be potty trained early in life. Bernedoodles, though, can be slightly more stubborn than Goldendoodles. 

Both dogs respond well to command training, whether it is professional or not.

Bernedoodles most likely develop behavioral problems if not trained early in life. However, the case isn’t similar to Goldendoodles.

Goldendoodles vs. Bernedoodles Grooming Needs

Bernedoodles require more grooming than a Goldendoodle or any average dog. The Bernese and Poodle fur will start matting soon if not brushed regularly. It is important to brush Bernedoodles daily or at least four times a week. For grooming at a dog salon, take your Bernedoodle at least once in two to three months.

Similarly, if your Goldendoodle has a straight or wavy coat, brush them twice weekly. However, if they have a curly coat, you might need to brush them more often. For professional grooming, consider the schedule once in two months.

Goldendoodles vs. Bernedoodles Lifespan

Goldendoodles have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. In contrast, Bernedoodles have a lifespan of 12 to 18 years. Bernedoodles’ Bernese side of life expectancy is nearly seven years, but it is the Poodle DNA that grants them a long life.

Goldendoodles vs. Bernedoodles as Therapy Dogs

Both Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles make excellent support dogs but for different purposes. Goldendoodles are good as service animals that can support humans. Whereas, Bernedoodles are companion dogs for emotional support since they are highly responsive to one’s emotions and feelings.

Goldendoodles vs. Bernedoodles Rescuing

Rescuing a Goldendoodle is more likely since these dogs are very common and thus present in large numbers. However, Bernedoodles are still new and rare, and therefore rescuing them is a less common instance. 

Bernedoodles aren’t very easy to rehome, and the breeder who raised them or professionals might be needed for help.

Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles are crossbreeds that people absolutely enjoy. These loving dogs are a treat to have at home, especially if you live in a family.

However, Goldendoodles are dogs for a more active and social family. In contrast, Bernedoodles are for families who can be calm. Bernedoodles are also large and therefore need much more space than Goldendoodles. 

Bernedoodles are a great choice for people who live in colder regions. Whereas Goldendoodles can tolerate temperate climates well, and harsh winters are not for them. 

Lastly, Bernedoodles can be a bit pricey, anywhere between $2,500 and $5,000. At the same time, Goldendoodles on average cost $2000.
