Like humans, cats are also prone to have neurological issues. Seizure is one of the most common neurological problems of Bengal cats. As a Bengal cat owner, I was worried about the seizure fact, which leads me to the question, are Bengal cats prone to seizures?
I did a little research on this topic, and here’s what I found.
Are Bengal cats prone to seizures?
Are Bengal cats prone to seizures? Whether your cat is Bengal or from another breed, it doesn’t make your cat prone to seizures unless it faces certain issues like head trauma, chemical exposures, lack of nutrition, and illness.
There is no connection of seizures with the cat’s breed. So, the breed can’t be a particular reason for the seizure of your cat.

Why do cats face seizures?
Cat’s brains have all similar portions to human brains. The cerebrum is one of the main functional parts of the brain. When the cerebral cortex fails to function properly, seizures may occur in cats.
The cerebral cortex may show dysfunctionality for various reasons. For instance, chemical exposures, lack of proper nutrition, injuries in the head, and abnormal neurological functionality can cause the cerebral cortex’s dysfunctionality.
However, different chemicals present in shampoos or cat foods can also cause seizures in your cat. Mainly a chemical of outer substances called pyrethrin can induce the possibility of seizure in your Bengal cat.
Almost all the cat breeds face seizures. It’s more like a brain abnormality in cats. A seizure can occur if your cat faces any head injuries or accidents. Accidents increase the risk of a seizure in your cat.

To make an easy understanding for you, two types of seizures can occur to your cat. Your cat can face general seizures or focal seizures. For two different types, your cat can act completely differently.
Following are the symptoms of focal seizures in Bengal cats:
- Crying loudly in pain
- Aggressive behavior
- Drooling
- Abnormal behavior
- Losing the functionality of a leg
- Shaking and twitching
Following are the symptoms of generalized seizures in Bengal cats:
- Loss of consciousness
- Shaking
- Twitching
- Moving legs in an irregular pattern
- Opening and closing mouths frequently.
- Urinating
Your cat can face seizures even during sleep. If it’s having a seizure during the sleep, you won’t be able to woke them up.
How to prevent seizures of Bengal cats?
As all the cat breeds are likely to face seizures at least once in a lifetime, there are no special treats for the Bengal cats. You can follow general prevention techniques:
You can take your cat for regular medical check-ups, keeping track of the health can prevent a sudden occurrence of seizures. Also, make sure to make the diet plan for your cat healthy and suitable.
Try to notice what you are using for your cat regularly. Stop using any product where harmful chemicals might be present.
It would help if you always keep your cat in a safe and healthy environment. If your cat already has any underlying issues, do not hesitate to give regular medications and checkups. Underlying health problems can induce the possibility of seizures in your cat.
But if your cat is already prone to severe seizures, it’s not possible to completely prevent that from happening. In that case, you can feed it proper medications to make the seizures shorter than usual.
What to do if my Bengal cat faces seizures?
Irregular and short seizures are normal in all cats. If the seizure is irregular, there is nothing to worry about. But if the reason behind your cat’s seizure is unknown, you should consult with a veteran.
If your Bengal cat faces a seizure for the first time, try to note the time length of the seizure. Afterward, make sure that your cat is in a safe place and not hurting itself.
During seizures, cats become very aggressive and can hurt themselves harshly. If it’s not in a safe place, try to move it wrapping up a blanket. Otherwise, you might get scratched or be bitten by your cat.
In case you have other cats or pet animals in your house, immediately move them away from the cat that’s having a seizure. Usually, a seizure can last up to five minutes.
If you see that your cat has other problems like breathing difficulties or abnormal restless behavior, don’t delay taking it to the veterinarian immediately. Also, in case of your cat has several seizures in a day, you should seek the help of a veteran.
Multiple seizures a day can be the cause of heart attack or other vital problems. Moreover, the lack of oxygen can occur in the brain, causing permanent paralysis in your cat. That’s why don’t delay visiting the veteran if you suspect a prolonged seizure.
Final thoughts
So, now you know that seizure does not depend on any specific breed. I hope that my experience and research have been helpful to you. If you want to know any further information, try to seek a veteran’s help.
Besides, note all the necessary symptoms that your cat show, this may help the veteran to provide better treatment. Good luck to your little friend!
